The Great Foundation Search

Woman choosing foundation in cosmetics aisle

I have been on the search for a new foundation, and have recently discovered that there are more types than I thought possible! Sure, we all know about the traditional liquids, the more recent mineral powders, and the advent of the BB and CC creams. But there are even more types it would seem, and how do I find the right color match and the right formula?

  • Color – Trial and error is the way to go. If you are shopping higher-end brands, you can more than likely test them at a counter before actually purchasing. If you are looking at drugstore brands, you have to take your best guess, which can get pricey. But if you have a feel for your skin’s undertone (warm, cool, or neutral), you can start to narrow it down a little.
  • Formula – This one can be tricky as well. Overall, there are certain “rules” about which skin types need which formulas. But you can work with your skin instead of fighting it. For example, if you would like to use the loose mineral powders but you have dry skin that looks flaky under the powder, try a light moisturizer or serum underneath to smooth and nourish your skin. If you have oilier skin but would like a traditional liquid, you can layer a primer underneath or set the foundation with powder on top.

I have been trying several different Etsy creators and have yet to land the perfect match – that wonderful combination of color, finish, and SPF coverage. One of the difficulties I have run into is the fact that since SPF claims are regulated by the FDA, Etsy retailers cannot make hard claims. I may end up switching my thought process to a more traditional brand for that reason alone.
