How to Care for Oily Skin

I understand what it’s like to have oily skin because I had a phase when my face was kind of oily. I hated the shine and the feeling of oiliness so I sought out ways to properly care for my face until the oily phase passed. To avoid breakouts and that unwanted shine, here are some of the things I did to care for my skin:

  • Wash your face no more than twice a day. It’s very tempting to wash more than twice, but it would only make your face produce more oil to make up for the moisture you’re ripping off. Oil is your face’s natural moisturizer, so regulate the production by washing twice a day—religiously.

How to Care for Oily Skin

  • Avoid scrubbing your face because it can stimulate oil production. Use gentle washing motions and avoid products with beads.
  • Use your toner properly. Apply your toner to the oiliest areas of your face. You really don’t need to apply it on your cheeks if they’re not as oily as your forehead, nose, and chin.
  • Choose water-based moisturizers and steer clear of the oil-based ones. You will need to moisturize your face every once in a while when over dryness is observed, but remember to apply just a thin layer.
  • Use a gentle cleanser. However, if you feel that it doesn’t work because it’s “too gentle,” try to use something which has benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These are especially great if you have acne-prone skin because it will dry up those pimples as well.

  • Use non-comedogenic products. This is to avoid pore clogging whenever you use makeup.
  • Exfoliate. Doing this once a week will help remove the layer of dead skin and other things that are blocking your pores. People who have oily skin tend to have thicker dead skin buildup so exfoliating just once a week will do the trick.
  • Have some oil-absorbing pads ready. Trust me on this one, they really help! They’re great for controlling the shine and also help lessen the need for powdering over and over throughout the day.

Try to include these tips to your skincare routine and you’ll have less oily skin!
