Beauty Dictionary: Essences

Woman with beauty products

As the Korean skincare methods gain traction worldwide, some of the steps in these methods are rather unknown to most of the world.  One such product is the essence.  These are typically gel or liquid in texture but are considered a serum-like treatment product.  Most often applied after cleansing and toning, they absorb easily and usually are packed with concentrated active ingredients that help boost the effectiveness of your other treatments and moisturizers.  The liquid ones tend to absorb more quickly into the skin, but the gel ones are perfect for precisely applying them to areas of concern.

  • To minimize the signs of aging and dark spots, try the DHC Vitamin C Essence with its gel texture and precise pin point tip to help reduce waste and to help target the areas of concern.
  • For uneven skin tone, dullness, and uneven texture, the liquid SK-II GenOptics Spot Essence can help with an overall brighter complexion and absorbs very quickly into the skin.
  • Some of these products help enhance the hydration of your skin such as the belif Hungarian Water Essence. Rosemary and lavender are extremely hydrating and also provide powerful antioxidants.
  • Occasionally these products are also called waters as in the case of the Caudalie Grape Water. Not only can it increase the skin’s hydration exponentially, it can also help soothe irritated skin and boost resilience in the long term.

The essence is a critical step in almost all Korean skincare regimens because not only do they typically contain powerful ingredients themselves, but they can also boost the effectiveness of your other products by helping to prepare the skin.  If you have been looking for a way to add “that glow” to your complexion, introducing an essence or water to your regimen could be the perfect solution.
